What Activities Are Safe Post Embryo Transfer?

You’ve made it to the big moment in an IVF cycle, embryo transfer day! After you have your embryo transferred and you’ve left the fertility clinic to begin the two-week wait, you might start to wonder what activities are safe and recommended after an embryo transfer. We asked Dr. Roohi Jeelani, Fertility Doctor at KindBody, what she recommends to her IVF patients.

Activity Post Embryo Transfer

Dr Roohi Jeelani, MD, is a highly-skilled reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist focusing on all areas of reproductive health, she currently practices at Kindbody. Here’s what Dr. Jeelani had to say about post embryo transfer activity.

So we know bed rest doesn’t help the success of an embryo transfer and resumption of normal activity is best. But what is normal activity?

I tell my patients to keep a steady state heart rate (resting and for sure below 150 if working out). No vigorous or new exercises. No intercourse.

What do studies show?

LBI rates (56.7% vs. 41.6%) were observed to be significantly higher in the no rest (NR) group than in the rest (R) group.

Lower miscarriage rates (18.3% vs. 27.5%) were shown in the NR when compared with the R group.

Comparable implantation rates were obtained with or without bedrest after embryo transfer.

The the two-week-wait is tough! It’s a magical time, filled with so much hope, but also overwhelm and fear. We recommend practicing lots of self-care, planning fun date nights with your partner or getting together with friends, listening to your body, and focusing on optimizing your nutrition and mental health.
